Our Mission

Members of the Markow Family and Markow Family Foundation

By embracing a comprehensive approach to philanthropy, we aim to create a lasting impact on the lives of children and communities, ensuring a brighter and more equitable future for all.

The Markow Family Foundation is a nonprofit organization passionately dedicated to enriching and transforming the lives of children and their families who face adversity.

Inspired by the unwavering commitment of Dan Markow, to making a profound difference, our foundation pledges to utilize every contribution received from his Sterling companies, collectively known as The Markow Companies Inc, to uplift and develop the lives of these children and families.

Along with our principal focus, The Markow Family Foundation proudly builds upon the historical and current efforts of the Sterling Companies. In addition to our commitment to children, we actively engage in initiatives such as food drives, fundraising for veterans, contributing to local organizations for cancer research, organizing blood drives, and extending support to other causes in line with our core mission. To further our mission, we seek collaborations with organizations that champion the causes of children facing various adversities.

Dan Markow is the CEO and president of The Markow Companies, Inc. the parent organization to the Sterling brand of moving companies. He began working for Sterling in 2005 as a mover in the Commercial Moving Division when he was a teenager, learning the company from the ground up.

Dan’s goal is to leverage the success of his companies to create a meaningful foundation, impacting the lives of as many children and families as possible within his local community.

Dan considers himself the third generation of public service tradition within his family. His late grandfather, Raymond M. LaFontaine, had a major impact on his life. Serving in the Massachusetts House of Representatives, Raymond worked tirelessly as a distinguished legislator to bring his town of Gardner economic opportunity. He played a major role in the founding of Mount Wachusett Community College and supplied vital infrastructure to Gardner including the Courthouse, High School, Correctional Institution, and Skating Rink. He was awarded an honorary Doctor of Philosophy degree in 2011.

The tradition continues with Dan’s aunt and Raymond’s daughter, Lyn Burke, also serving on the Board of The Markow Foundation. Lyn’s LuminArtz, a 501(c)3 organization, ties in local artists, designers, and technologies to reimagine our world with experiential art that uses large-scale lighting and sound displays to transcend our sense of place within the community.

Beyond the companies and foundation, Dan’s wife Kristen and their three children are his main focus. He is extremely dedicated to being an involved father/husband and is grateful for the opportunity to work directly with Kristen on this joint venture that is The Markow Family Foundation.

In recognition of his outstanding contributions, he was honored with an honorary Doctor of Philosophy degree in 2011.

Joyce, his beloved wife, left an indelible mark as an OBGYN Nurse in Gardner, MA, serving as the first comforting presence for multiple generations of Gardner residents.
